The Long Road to Magnolias

Centuries before Bessie Johnson opened her kitchen doors, the distinct flavors of Cajun and Creole recipes were slowly simmering in the deep South.  Beginning in 1720, with the French colonization of Louisiana and followed by 40 years of Spanish rule, a mixture of ethnicities including African, Caribbean, German, Irish, and English settled in the territory. Gradually blending an immense diversity of cultures, a timeless cuisine unlike any other was born. Now, nearly 300 years later, Bessie shares this southern sophistication with you.

Magnolias…beautiful, welcoming, a heady sign that something gracious is in view.  And so you venture closer and become intoxicated with the delicious smells and warm inviting space inviting you to a haven where les bons temps roulez…the good times roll.  There in the heart of Magnolias, Bessie works her magic in her kitchen and on your senses.  You haven’t just come for a meal. Come and experience the southern hospitality that is Magnolias. This is authentic southern dining after all. And it just wouldn’t be the best-of-the-bayou if you didn’t feel at home while enjoying the distinct, delicious flavors of authentic Cajun and Creole food.  With just a bite, you’ll taste it – a dining experience like no other. Something only Bessie herself can serve.

Magnolias is an experience in which the food, hospitality, and the closeness of a family are brought together. Southern traditions bring together all generations of family members to tell stories, to exchange ideas, to share the joys and sorrows that challenge our lives. For Bessie, the importance of family is the finest ingredient in Magnolias.

The term “garite” is an old French N’Oleans word for “porch”. It is symbolic of a time past. Of a time before, TV’s, cell phones, and computers, where friends, neighbors and generations of family gathered for an evening on old fashion entertainment. Where stories are told, and traditions are carried on, and family is reminded that the closeness they share is bought together by the simple joys of laughter, home cooking and spending time with each other.

We wish to welcome you and your family to our garite, our food is southern, our hospitality is old fashioned, and we always have in our hearts “A Place for Family”.

Magnolia’s owners Bessie and Charles Johnson celebrate being recognized by the Zagat Awards this year. This local jewel has been featured on the Unknown Eater, San Diego Magazine, The Metropolitan, and many more. Take a look at what some of these folks are saying.
